Dear Friend of Hastings Philharmonic Choir
The nights are drawing in, the leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping, and the choir is well into a busy autumn rehearsal schedule. After enjoying a pleasant afternoon’s socialising and fundraising at our summer garden party, we are now energised for the challenge of the works we’ll be performing in a month’s time. With several new singers having joined us this term, the choir is sounding confident and strong - and beautiful, of course. We are now looking forward to our first concert of the season on November 9th, when we’ll be performing two much-loved choral works.

The choir, with four soloists, will be performing two choral works, accompanied by the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Marcio da Silva. Haydn’s delightful Oboe Concerto will complete the programme
It will be the second time the choir has performed Vivaldi’s Gloria with Marcio as conductor. Perhaps some of our audience will remember our first performance, given at St. Clements Church in Hastings Old Town. The Gloria has become well established in the choral repertoire, though it was only discovered relatively recently, in 1926. The work is thought to have been composed between 1713 and 1716 for the orphans and foundlings of the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, where Vivaldi was employed as chorus master at that time.
Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis, better known as the ‘Nelson’ Mass, was composed during the Napoleonic wars, and forever linked with Admiral Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. That victory is aptly expressed in the joyfully uplifting music of Haydn’s final movement. The choir last performed this work under the baton of our previous conductor, Hilary Davan Wetton, so we are now very much looking forward to performing Marcio’s interpretation for you.

The choir’s main funding comes from our singers’ yearly subscriptions, currently £190 per person, which covers our rehearsal costs throughout the year. This season, our November concert alone, with its a modestly sized orchestra, will cost us in the region of £5,000. It means that, even if the concert is a sellout, we still won’t cover our costs. So, any donation you can make, however small, will help us continue to give you concerts of high quality in our local venues. As examples:
£10 pays for a presentation bouquet for a soloist
£50 pays for a set of hire parts for the orchestra
£150 sponsors an orchestral player
£300 pays a soloist’s fee
£500 pays the conductor’s fee
ARE YOU INVOLVED WITH A LOCAL BUSINESS?
Might your company or organisation be prepared to sponsor the choir, either financially or through another kind of service, with acknowledgement on our website, concert posters and concert programmes?
