Dear Friend of Hastings Philharmonic Choir
It's March, spring seems to be on its way at last, and our next concert is only ten days away! Do join us for what promises to be a splendid evening of music: two choral masterpieces approprate for the Easter season, by Rossini and Brahms, and a well-known overture by Beethoven.
Gioachino Rossini (1792-1868) composed his setting of the 13th-century hymn Stabat Mater, a reflection on Mary's suffering at the crucifixion, between 1831 and 1841. Despite its sacred text, the work incorporates operatic vocal writing and dramatic contrasts characteristic of Rossini's style.
The younger composer Johannes Brahms composed his Schicksalslied ('Song of Destiny') in 1868-71. Its text, a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, contrasts the peaceful existence of divine beings with the uncertainty and suffering of human life. Scored for chorus and orchestra, the work concludes with a peaceful instrumental epilogue.
Whether your preference is for the Italianate lyricism of Rossini's consummate vocal writing, Brahms' richly romantic harmonies and texture or the nervous energy of Beethoven's 'Coriolan' overture, you'll find something to delight you in this varied programme.
