Dear Friends
Welcome to our first Newsletter of 2022!
We are thrilled to have been able to rehearse and perform uninterruptedly throughout the winter this year. Our first major performance of the season – our Mozart and Lauridsen concert in November, with full choir and orchestra – was a sell-out success. It is clear that, after the enforced silence and cancellations of 2020–21, the choir is enjoying a period of regeneration, with keen new members joining and further exciting repertoire planned for the remainder of the season. We do hope to see you in the audience for our March concert.

Our Spring Concert features one of the glories of the Romantic choral repertoire. Join us for this performance of Brahms' magnificent Ein deutsches Requiem (German Requiem). Composed in the wake of the double loss of his mother and his close friend and mentor Robert Schumann, the work is imposing in scale, yet consolatory in tone, ending with a serene message of hope. Plus, opening the programme, the orchestra will treat us to Mendelssohn's atmospheric seascape, the 'Hebrides' Overture.
Helen May (soprano), John Holland-Avery (baritone), Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Marcio da Silva
Christ Church, Silchester Road, St Leonards-on-Sea TN37 6GL

Brahms’ German Requiem, a towering masterpiece of the Romantic choral repertoire, calls for soloists and a large orchestra alongside the choir. Our members’ subscriptions and concert ticket sales are never sufficient to cover the considerable costs of mounting such a large-scale performance, and the past year of covid restrictions has severely limited our fundraising activities.
We are grateful to those Friends who have generously supported us with donations in the past. For those who would like to give additional financial support this year, we have two new schemes operating: you may choose to become a Patron of Hastings Philharmonic Choir with a minimum donation of £25, or to Sponsor a Musician (£150 sponsors an orchestral player, £300 a soloist, or £500 the conductor).
For further information about these schemes, or to make a donation, please either visit our website: https://www.hastingsphilchoir.org.uk/donate or email patrons@hastingsphilchoir.org.uk
Any donation, large or small, helps us to present the high-quality performances that you expect and love, and that so enrich the musical life of our town.
