Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1643-1704) was one of the most renowned, gifted and prolific French composers of his generation, holding many important posts as a church musician in Paris. Yet his music lay forgotten for over two centuries after his death, including his splendid D major setting of the Te Deum, lavishly scored for solo voices and choir, accompanied by strings, woodwind, trumpets and timpani. Composed in the early 1690s, when it was rediscovered in 1953, its fanfare-like opening was quickly adopted as the signature tune of the European Broadcasting Union, heard in the opening credits of Eurovision events - thus ensuring that the Te Deum is today one of Charpentier's best known works.

Purcell: My heart is inditing |

The coronation of James II with his queen, Mary, held at Westminster Abbey on 23 April 1685, was a lavish and richly musical event. Amongst the works specially composed for the occasion was Henry Purcell’s ‘My heart is inditing’, performed in honour of Queen Mary as she was enthroned next to her husband. To welcome our new king and his consort, and in anticipation of his coronation next year, we have included Purcell’s magnificent anthem in our autumn concert of Baroque masterpieces.

J.S. Bach: Magnificat in D |
Bach composed his joyful Magnificat in 1723 to celebrate his first Christmas as Kantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Some ten years later he revised the work, transposing it to the key of D major - ideal for the inclusion of festive Baroque trumpets. It remains one of his best loved and most magnificent short choral works.
