SUMMARY:Summer concert 2023: Mendelssohn's Elijah
DESCRIPTION:This exciting project forms part of HPO&rsquo\;s Open Doors Fes
tival.&nbsp\; In a collaboration with choirs from Freiburg in Germany (inc
luding Chor Münchweier\, Cantemus! Gundelfingen\, the church choir of St
George and school choirs from Ettenheim)\, Billingshurst Choral Society an
 d the Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra we shall perform Mendelssohn&rsquo\;
s magnificent oratorio Elijah.&nbsp\; This local concert is the second sta
ge of an exchange with the German choirs: members of HPC and the Billingsh
urst Choral Society will take part in a similar performance in Freiburg th
e preceding week.\n\nHailed as the Messiah of its day\, Elijah was hugely
popular and cemented Mendelssohn&#39\;s position as one of the greatest co
mposers of sacred music.&nbsp\;\n\nA review published in the Times shortly
after its first performance was unstinting in its praise:&nbsp\;&lsquo\;T
he last note of Elijah was drowned in a long-continued unanimous volley of
plaudits\, vociferous and deafening ... never was there a more complete t
riumph\; never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of a
 rt.&rsquo\;\n\nHelen May (soprano)\nMarta Fontanals-Simmons (mezzo-soprano
 )\nAnthony Flaum (tenor)\nJack Lawrence-Jones (baritone)\n\nwith Hastings
Philharmonic Orchestra\, conducted by Felix Konetschny\, Cornelius Leenen\
, Bernhard Schmidt and&nbsp\;Marcio da Silva\n\nSupported by funding from
Arts Council England.\n\n\nFor full event details\, visit: https://www.has
